About

Nikki Strong is a counsellor, psychotherapist and tertiary educator based on Awabakal country in Newcastle, Australia. She holds a Master of Counselling (UNE) and a Bachelor of Arts (Gender Studies and Psychology) from USYD.

In 2024 Nikki completed a Bachelor of Psychological Sciences (Honours Class I) at UON where she pursued her thesis research on ADHD and women’s health and was awarded the UON College Medal.

In her private practice, Nikki’s work primarily focuses on providing evidence-based, neuroaffirming support to neurodivergent individuals, especially for women and the LGBTQIA+ community. As someone with lived experience of ADHD, Nikki is passionate about helping people create a life that works with their brain, rather than against it.

As a university educator, she teaches a range of counselling and psychotherapy topics in under/postgraduate education. Her philosophy is centred in helping students meaningfully connect the theory with real world practices as well as demystifying and humanising the role of counsellor and psychotherapist.

Therapeutic & Treatment Approaches

As someone with ADHD myself, I’m passionate about creating a safe space for clients to share and process their thoughts, feelings and experiences without the shame and stigma.

As a person centred practitioner, my goal is not to “fix” or “change” clients. Rather, it is to walk alongside them on this journey and help them understand what goals are important to them. For some, it’s gaining a better understanding of the past and current impacts that ADHD has had on their life.

For others, it’s about developing specific neuro-affirming strategies to improve self-care, organisational skills, emotional regulation, daily functioning, interpersonal skills etc.

I use evidence-based approaches such as PCT, DBT, ACT and CBT, with a particular interest in interventions that have research demonstrating their effective and safe use with neurodivergent clients.
